From Variety by Rebecca Rubin & Matt Donnelly
In a surprising break from industry standards, Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate — a list of 17 films that includes “The Matrix 4,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” remake, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical adaptation of “In the Heights,” the “Sopranos” prequel “The Many Saints of Newark” and “The Suicide Squad” — will debut both on HBO Max and in theaters on their respective release dates.
Warner Bros.’ 2021 release slate also includes Denzel Washington’s thriller “The Little Things,” biographical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah,” a remake of “Tom and Jerry,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” video game adaptation “Mortal Kombat,” Angelina Jolie’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “Reminiscence” with Hugh Jackman, James Wan’s “Malignant” and the Will Smith sports drama “King Richard.”

From the table above their are some obvious choices. GODZILLA VS. KONG is a must see and there really is not much debate to be had about the subject. The theater experience for all THREE now of this new monster/kaiju shared universe have all be phenomenal. Looking forward to this one in the loudest theater possible.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD seems worth the trip. I want to support James Gunn movies in any way I can. He has been producing as close to auteur filmmaking that can be done, along with a few others, so I think it is always a good idea to show up at the theater and pay up to keep directors like him working.

Of course, DUNE. Denis Villeneuve is a stand out director in the past few years. ARRIVAL and BLADE RUNNER 2049 are near perfect films. I have high expectations for DUNE and will be seeking out a theater with the best screen and sound I can possibly find. I have a feeling this film is going to be an experience in filmmaking like no other he has directed so far.

The last on this worth the trip is whatever they title THE MATRIX 4. I am very against the “soft reboot” concept in general and the only good Matrix movie in my opinion is the first one. Either way Christmas movies are always attractive because it is the time of year I see movies with my entire family and the discussions are amazing and I’m sure, no matter how the film turns out, it will bring great discussion.
